Recent Awards in the Engineering and Construction Industry are proving to employers and future graduates that Queensland’s engineering future is something to look forward to.

This month The Engineers Australia, Queensland Engineering Excellence awards acknowledged six individuals, seven projects and one prestigious company for their innovative and highly advanced projects.

The prestigious RW Hawken Award (Queensland’s top engineering prize) was awarded to the $360 million Richlands to Springfield Project.

The Richlands to Springfield project was entered by TrackStar Alliance a subsidiary of Theiss Pty Ltd, who displayed techniques and expertise in delivering 9.5 kilometres of electrified dual railway track, two new stations, seven rail bridges, over 1.5 kilometres of elevated rail structures and a 5.5km Centenary Highway upgrade.

Brisbane-based Thiess Pty Ltd, recently came second on the Cordell Information and Housing Industry Associations Construction 100 List, with $2.88 billion worth of contracts in 2013/14.

Thiess Pty Ltd is currently developing the $1.147 billion Moreton Bay Rail Link. The project consists of 12.6 kilometres of dual-track passenger line from Petrie to Kippa-Ring, six new railway stations, a stabling yard at Kippa-Ring, new roads, overpasses and a shared-user path.

There is a new focus in Australia for business investment with an emphasis on non-residential construction. Projects like these are providing jobs for electrical, mechanical and building engineers and tradesmen.

To meet the demand universities like The University of Queensland (UQ) and CQ University are currently altering course delivery. These alterations include more hands on work ready degrees with strong connections to companies in the industry. UQ’s Advanced Engineering Building (AEB) at St Lucia is hoping to enhance the University’s ability to deliver practical active-learning for engineering students, making the most of global research opportunities and shifts in innovation.
