The world’s first HVAC rating tool for ranking energy systems in terms of energy efficiency is being developed in Australia with Sustainability Victoria currently supervising the development process.
The Calculating Cool Online HVAC Rating Tool will use qualitative and quantitative data to analyse the design, installation and operation phases of the different HVAC systems and rank them based on their performance.
The tool is being developed in collaboration with Australian Institute of Refrigeration, Air-conditioning and Heating (AIRAH), the Property Council of Australia, the Facilities Management Association of Australia, and the Airconditioning and Mechanical Contractors’ Association.
Phil Wilkinson, CEO of AIRAH says that Calculating Cool was designed keeping in mind the importance of the performance of an HVAC system, especially since HVAC systems in current use represent more than half of potential improvements that could be made in energy - efficiency.
The online calculator, which will be used to generate rankings of HVAC systems, will be able to perform long-term monitoring and analysis operations alongside data collection and is in line with AIRAH's work to advance the government’s HVAC Home Energy Saver Scheme (HESS).
The Calculating Cool HVAC Tool is expected to be in the form of an online calculator which will be easily accessible. The tool at present is in the development stages and trials are expected to take place by the end of the year.
The ARIAH hopes that the HVAC rating criteria will have a significant influence on market practices by persuading companies to improve quality of their products in terms of energy efficiency.
